From Oppara with Love Chapter 1

The Devil’s Kiss Casino, located in Westgate in central Cheliax, was a grand affair.  Plush red carpets ran the entire floor and crystal chandeliers lined the ceiling.  Rose-colored glass globes hung throughout the casino, each featuring a single gem radiating continual light that bathed the room in a comforting red glow.

Several tables, featuring an assortment of games and spaced comfortably apart for the luxury of the patrons, littered the floor while leather clad women navigated the lanes carrying trays with drinks and exotic tobaccos. The games were operated by halflings wearing uniform white shirt and black tie. Beefy male half orcs and a few tieflings dressed in matching black dinner jackets, walked their circuits keeping their eyes peeled for cheats and troublemakers. (more…)

White Shadows, Chapter 1 Part 1

Hauptmann Karessa double-checked the guard routes one more time before heading to her office at the aisle. The guards had been doubled for the night after Bishop Maxfel Hedrin announced his visit. She felt anxious about the notorious bishop’s sudden appearance. After all this could be her opportunity to impress the top brass of Asmodeus church. Yet this sudden visit worried her. It was not unheard of for the notorious inquisitor to audit the temples’ authorities, which included her, but his visit coincided with some disturbing rumors.

Two days before the Bishop’s arrival a couple of Karessa’s men overheard a woman asking questions about the temple. Her questions and the proximity to the bishop’s visit were too close to the mark to be a coincidence. Unfortunately when she sent her men back for the woman she was nowhere to be found. (more…)

White Shadows, Chapter 1 Part 2

<–begins here

The girl fell, gasping for air and contorting in pain, a couple of meters away from the strength of the infernal blow. But her strategy and tactic had paid off.

The Bishop had expected his sudden movement to take the sacred avenger off-guard. He has miscalculated. As the Bishop had pulled her, she had jumped forward, using the inquisitor’s own strength for momentum, her sword slashing above her head. The weapon had hit Hedrin in the head, embedding itself on his skull and slicing his brain in two as his fist punched the assassin’s chest and sent her away. (more…)

Spit and Polish Part 1

Curn Bounder | April 11, 2010

Caison crinkled his nose against the cleaning solution’s caustic fumes.   He thought he’d gotten used to the tear-generating vapors over the past two-and-a-half years, but as he rubbed the cloth over the plaque beneath an enormous Azlanti vase, he felt as if he were smelling it for the first time all over again.  Dolan probably made Persh mix the solution stronger than ever to enhance the punishment.

Dolan always had Caison pay off his demerits in Sky Reach’s Grand Hall, so everyone could witness him doing the same chore nearly once a month.  They would pass by and openly chortle or snicker while putting on the appearance of disinterested aloofness. He’d done it so often since his arrival to the Grand Lodge that he’d earned the nickname “Buff.” Assistant Sword Master Dolan had a personal grudge against Caison.  To be sure, the Initiate often defied his instructors when he deemed their deeds feeble, demands petty, or lessons lacking, and he struggled to form lasting bonds with his classmates.  However, Dolan’s punishments exceeded Caison’s offenses.  The man took unwarranted pleasure in each sentence he could impose.  Caison resigned himself to accepting any punishments the petulant instructor doled out to him.  At least the extra chores kept his idle hands from practicing his skills on his classmates.

Pathfinders of Qadira Part 5

QadiraSmWhat if something was down there?

I gave up on the lantern and decided to use a little magic.  I was beginning to miss my wayfinder.  Its ability to radiate light would have been very useful now, but it was safer where it was.  I did not want the men to steal it.

I took off my pack and withdrew a stone from one of its exterior pockets.  Slowly I drew my sword and set my pack on the stairs.  With my sword outstretched before me, I proceeded downward, commanding the stone to shine.  Lantern light would have been brighter but I felt the stone’s light would be enough, though I had my doubts when I remembered the stone’s magic would soon wane.
